Editorial: Ben - Mans best friend
This morning I was awakened by Viv, my wife. The light was on and she had brought me breakfast in bed. On the tray she had placed a single daffodil, the first to appear in our garden. She had found it when she had walked Ben, our Golden Retriever. She explained that Ben had enjoyed his walk this morning and had wanted to keep on walking around the farms, which border our village and land.
Ben came to us last year, lonely, pale, worn and troubled. His owner, Ted (Viv’s uncle), had died and Ben had been put into kennels and although he had the best of attention, his interest in life was as low as it gets.
Our first port of call was to the vets. The vet turned out to be a very nice and a very efficient Australian man, who declared that Ben, (for his age of 10 years), was overweight and not very fit but because of his age (70 in human terms), that was to be expected.
This made me think. Do we expect to feel old and past it at 70? Maybe even at 60. Then I remembered in America, anyone over the age of 50 is classed as a geriatric. Our next port of call was to purchase a kennel and all the trappings that make a dog’s life good. Then I personally took responsibility for Ben’s diet. I looked through books, leaflets, shelves of tinned food for dogs and cats, packages of this and that and huge sacks of “All in One” dried foods for dogs. I was amazed there was food for small dogs, medium dogs and large dogs. There was food for young dogs, mature dogs and knackered dogs like Ben and in almost every case, their formulas were awful.
I feel really sorry for all those dogs eating this junk for the rest of their lives. Like most things in life, there are exceptions and I found a dried food of exceptional quality called Royal Canin Maximature.
Ben is fed twice a day, morning and evening. Each meal contains 1 mugful of Maximature and 100 grams of cooked chicken and now for the clever bit, mixed into each meal, he gets Healthy Pets Glucosamine with added Dessicated Liver, Alfalfa & Kelp and Flax Seed Oil. To help him lose weight, he has So Slim Phaseolin powder with each of his meals. To say it’s been a revelation is an understatement.
Ben is unrecognisable from the dog of 6 months ago. He just bounds about, 3 to 6 mile walks are an everyday adventure. The colour and texture of his coat is like that of a much younger dog, whereas before he could not walk much more than a mile without having to rest, because he was so unfit, through lack of exercise and poor nutrition and although he was clean and well looked after, his coat was dull and lifeless. It now glows with health and vitality.
We, as humans are exactly the same. Gentle exercise and good nutrition, including Kelp and Alfalfa, Dessicated Liver and Glucosamine with M.S.M. Sulphur and Flaxseed Oil every day will turn the clock back for most of us.
If 50 year olds act and feel like 70 year olds and 70 year olds feel like they are 90 years old, then it’s time they get started and turn the clock back 20 years. If an old dog like Ben can feel and act like a puppy, then why do any of us need to feel and act as if we were old.
Oh and by the way, the reason that Viv woke me this morning and gave me my breakfast in bed, was that she had promised the printer the newsletter that he could have the copy by 9.30am. So she had to get me down here to my office to get it written and typed up and the time of my being awakened, 5.45am, which means Viv and Ben were out walking around 4.45am, which proves we can all feel good if we look after our health, even those of us who are falling apart at the seams can improve our health with exercise and good nutrition. As they say, “A stitch in time saves lives”, or something like that,

I am a bit sceptical about taking supplements ........
I am a bit sceptical about taking supplements and I have only taken protein.
I am also sceptical of the 'sweeteners' put in the protein powders and the damage they cause long-term to health.
What sweetener do you put in your proteins?
I am 47 years old, 77kg and feel I am getting in the best shape of my life. Not huge, but just a good athletic shape and now at 11% bodyfat.
(Also NEVER taken or wish to take steroids)
My goal is to be 77kg but at around 6 - 7% bodyfat. What supplements to do you recommend particularly your proteins for ultimate lean mass gain and to assist with reducing the last 4 -5 % of bodyfat?
Best Regards, John (via email)
ARTHUR'S REPLY:
Dear John
Thank you for your email. I am sorry for the delay in answering but I have been away in South Africa, part of which was working with HIV and AIDS nutrition.
Let me assure you as we get older we need all the help we can get from our food, and supplements can help us no end when taken properly. Take for example Desiccated Liver and Alfalfa & Kelp. Desiccated Liver gives terrific energy, increases Haemoglobin Iron levels in the blood and is 75% Protein, the liver we use is also most importantly, de-fatted. The combination of Alfalfa & Kelp is as good as it gets for giving the body a perfect balance of natural minerals.
L-Arginine Nitric Oxide gives the body a terrific boost in Growth Hormone levels. Growth Hormone levels drop dramatically as we get older especially after the age of 30-35 years.
Lycopene, the red pigment in tomato skin is used for reducing Prostate Cancer and is great for keeping the Prostate healthy. Milk Thistle is used by the Medical profession for the healing of liver damage and is the best natural supplement for increasing liver health and boosting the immune system.
Tribulus and Horny Goat Weed are two natural food supplements for increasing Testosterone levels and improving ones sex drive. I have worked with thousands of sports people and bodybuilders over many years; many of the World, Olympic and Mr. Universe Champions, who have improved dramatically through taking food supplements and I can include myself in that number.
Ultimate-Nutrition supply Hospitals, Clinics and the Medical Profession, in fact we have large consignments of MSM and Glucosamine leaving today to a leading Doctor who specializes in knee, back and joint problems.
Last but not least Protein; all Ultimate-Nutrition proteins, Weight Gainers, Muscle Gainers and Meal Replacements have natural sweeteners. I use them every day and won’t take anything with synthetic sweeteners.
All the best, Arthur Fairhurst

When the University of Manchester researchers compared the levels of Beta-Cryptoxanthin in 264 adults, they found that those who had the highest levels were less likely to develop inflammatory arthritis, compared to those people with lower levels. You can reduce your risk by drinking the juice of one fresh orange a day. Those who already have arthritis will also benefit.
Glucosamine with Celadrin. How it helps..
Dear Sir/Madam
Your Ultimate-Nutrition Glucosamine and Celadrin is absolutely amazing. I cannot believe the results that I have benefited by taking Ultimate-Nutrition Glucosamine and Celadrin Gold.
I no longer suffer from the hell of painful knees, hands and shoulders that I had for over five years from arthritis, which was so bad at times that I had to take time off work.
I found Ultimate-Nutrition Glucosamine and Celadrin quite by chance by talking to a family member when I attended a wedding. He told me that he had found a miracle, although not a cure for arthritis, but better killing pain without the side effects of anti-inflammatory drugs called Celadrin Gold sold by a company called Ultimate-Nutrition.
When I called your company by phone the young lady who answered my call was lovely and said one of your nutritionists was on duty and would be able to tell me more about Celadrin Gold if he was available. Fortunately he was able to discuss my problem with me. Unfortunately I cannot remember the gentleman’s name but he was most helpful and explained that Celadrin was not a drug and worked as an anti-inflammatory without the side effects that anti-inflammatory drugs give you.
Please find enclosed with this letter my order and cheque for a further three months supply of your Glucosamine and Celadrin Gold, and just to say once again, thank you all at Ultimate-Nutrition for your help and support. Yours sincerely, Jeanette
Phaseolin the Starch & Carblocker - HowI lost 3 stone.....
Dear So Slim
Please send me 4 of your So Slim Phaseolin Starch & Carblocker 500 packs, one for myself and one pack each for three of my friends who are so impressed with my weight loss success.
As instructed on the pack I have taken 2 tablets with a meal and one with a snack each day for just over 5 months and I have lost almost 3 stone. I feel just great. Over many years I have tried almost every diet that came out with varying success but nothing I have tried ever came close to the success that I have had using So Slim Phaseolin. I think the answer for my success lies in the fact that provided I eat sensibly and take my So Slim Phaseolin each time that I eat, I don’t have to worry about eating carbohydrates because the Phaseolin looks after that.
Whilst the rest of my daily food intake is supplying me with all the vital nutrition that my body needs to make me feel good all the time and now that I have lost nearly 3 stone my husband of 12 years says although I am the only girl for him he now loves me even more. What does worry me though is that you might stop selling Phaseolin in the future. If you do ever decide to do so please let me know so that I can stock up with Phaseolin for the next 25 years – yours Patricia H.
Dear Arthur
For some time now, I have been suffering with high blood pressure. I have been told that potassium will reduce it. What do you advise?
SHAUN
Dear Shaun
Potassium can lower high blood pressure and one of the best ways of taking potassium is by eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables daily. Potassium is important for regulating the body’s fluid balance. A study which was carried out in Italy found that patients suffering from high blood pressure, who ate between three to six portions of fruit and vegetables a day were able to reduce their medication by half. A world of warning though, if you are suffering from high blood pressure, you do need to inform your G.P. if you have not already done so.

Dear Sir/Madam
Thank you for being so prompt with my order of your Aloe Vera Juice. I have been taking it for over two years now to help me with my irritable bowel problem. Every time I stop taking your Aloe Vera, the problem comes back. I always bought your Aloe Vera from my health food store but unfortunately it closed down in October last year. I went to buy some more of it from another health food shop in Bradford and the woman there sold me a different brand to yours called NAME WITHHELD made from whole leaf Aloe Vera. It made my irritable bowel worse than I have ever known it. I was so frightened to leave the house, in case I needed to rush to the toilet, which meant two weeks off work. But once I started back on your Aloe Vera Juice, everything went back to normal. Why is it that your Aloe Vera works and the other does not.
Yours
KEITH
Dear Keith
The outer leaf of Aloe Vera is full of aloins, which act as a purgative. It’s great if you suffer from constipation but fatal if you suffer from irritable bowel problems. The natives of the Caribbean Islands where vast amounts of Aloe Vera is grown will only use the inner gel from the Aloe Vera plant and they should know. They have used it for hundreds of years. The outer leaf is poisonous and full of toxins and the only reason that companies use the whole Aloe is to make more profit. The bulk weight of Aloe Vera is in the leaf so by combining some of it with the inner gel, the unscrupulous can make more profit.
ARTHUR MASSEY-FAIRHURST
Dear Arthur
I hope you don’t mind me calling you by your first name, but I do feel that I know you as a friend and family member. You have been so kind and helpful to me. I think everyone I know now knows who you are, since you started to advise me on what to do for my arthritis.
I have followed every bit of advice that you gave me, including taking your carb and starch blockers Phaseolin. I especially like the fruit and nut bars that you have put the Phaseolin into. My weight has dropped by almost 20lbs in the 3 months that I have been taking Phaseolin.
At my age, I am not interested in what I look like but I am interested in what I can do and that is, walking in the countryside, which for the last 2 years, I could not do. It hurt me so much to see my friends go off at weekends for their enjoyment, whilst I had to stay at home. Well it’s quite different now. I am walking better than I have done for years and it’s all because of you. So thank you and your little pills for making an old lady happy again.

ELIXIR GIVES ELDERLY MUSCLE –
BODYBUILDING TONIC CAN CURE PENSIONERS’ ACHES AND PAINS
Pensioners could avoid aches and pains by taking athletes’ bodybuilding supplements, scientists have discovered. Men and women over 65 who took daily doses of amino acid in a study had stronger muscles.
The research is certain to increase hopes that people could live longer, healthier lives by including amino acid in their diet.
And the supplements could help people recover from cancer by preventing some muscle wasting following chemotherapy. Professor Melinda Sheffield-Moore, who led the research, said, “These findings are very promising.”
“One of the great burdens of ageing is weakness and muscle wasting. If we can find a cheap and simple way to combat this, then it holds out the promise of offering a better quality of life as we get older.”
“Those suffering from or recovering from cancer have similar problems, except that the muscle wasting occurs more rapidly. If we can target muscle-wasting diseases using amino acids as nutritional therapy, perhaps we can prevent the loss of muscle mass and improve quality of life.”
Muscle is constantly being built and broken down, but as people age, the breakdown process is more successful than the muscle-building. Once adults reach 40 they start to lose between 0.5 and two per cent of their muscle each year.
As part of the research, scientists at the University of Texas gave small amounts of amino acid to 30 healthy volunteers aged over 65.
Bodybuilders and athletes often take amino acid supplements to help them bulk up after training. Some of the volunteers received as little as 3.75 grams twice a day for three months.
Yet their muscle mass increased by an average of two to four per cent even if they did not take any additional exercise.
Stronger muscles stop pensioners falling over so easily. The researchers believe supplements could also help elderly people who face long stays in hospital, when they have less ability to make new muscle tissue because they are lying in bed.
Prof. Sheffield-Moore advised elderly people taking amino acid to do some exercise as well.
“Whilst patients showed an increased muscle mass after three months of between-meal supplements, they didn’t show a parallel increase in muscle strength,” she said. “The amino acid supplements would most likely be more effective if combined with daily exercise.”
She presented her findings at a conference on hormones, nutrition and physical performance in Turin.
Just 4 Ultimate Nutrition Amino Acid tablets twice a day will give you the recommended dose.
Dear Arthur
Some years ago, I was lucky enough to attend one of your bodybuilding seminars. You said at the time that raw milk was better for everyone rather than pasteurized, skimmed or homogenized. My son has now started bodybuilding and weight training and he has been advised not to drink full milk (raw), as it is not good for him, because skimmed milk is far better and healthier for bodybuilders. I know that the bodybuilders you sponsor through your Ultimate Nutrition company are way ahead of anyone else. One has only to see that most of the major winners of bodybuilding contests are advised by you. I would appreciate your advice on which is the best type of milk for my son to use.
DAVE
Dear Dave
My belief has always been let nature control us not us control nature. Milk should not be messed about with. I found to my own cost that when I started to drink skimmed milk, I had endless irritable bowel problems. But once I went back to full milk, everything soon went back to normal. However don’t take my word for the benefits of full milk. Just look at the write up and web sites I have found for you. You and many thousands of bodybuilders soon realize the benefits that full milk will give them over the coming years, not only for gaining muscle and strength but for their good health which of course is paramount if they want to improve.

From research done by predominantly American scientists, there is a number of effects caused by Pasteurisation, Homogenisation and skimming of milk.
Pasteurisation
• Destroys pro-biotic enzymes
• Diminishes vitamin content
• Denatures milk proteins
• Destroys vitamins:- C, B12, B6
• Kills beneficial bacteria
• Promotes pathogens
• Is associated with allergies
• Increases tooth decay
• Associated with Colic in infants
• Causes growth problems in children
• Increases osteoporosis
• Affects arthritis
• Linked to heart diseases
• Associated with cancer
• Rather than turning sour it turns putrid
• Removes vital qualities causing constipation
Homogenisation
• Can cause the enzyme xanthine oxidase, to become very destructive to heart and arterial tissue. In raw milk they are digested in the intestine and stomach and used or excreted.
Skimming
• Removes vitamins A & D needed for assimilation of calcium and proteins in water fraction of the milk. This causes proteins and calcium difficult to utilise and possibly toxic.
• Removes short chain fatty acids, which protect against disease and stimulate the immune system.
• Removes Conjugated Linoleic acid which:- Offer some protection against breast cancer and other malignancies.
• Dramatically reduces the deposition of fat (Protection against becoming overweight).
Full Fat Milk
• Reduces the risk of children developing asthma
Pasture fed cows milk (grass fed)
• Contains Beneficial Omega 3.

Aloe Vera for digestive problems
I spoke to someone on the telephone a month ago regarding your aloe vera juice for a child with cerebral palsy with lots of digestive problems, colic and reflux, and vomiting, and you asked me to let you know how I got on.
Well we have had a real breakthrough, ever though it has not helped with his colic, the vomiting has stopped and for the first time he has not been sick in over a month, so it looks like it has really helped, just need a cure for the colic now.
I have also recommended your aloe vera juice to several other people with children with digestive problems.
just thought i would ley you know - Regards Lisa
